City of Hamilton Public Health reminds residents to take precautions in light of Raccoon Rabies
February 8, 2016 – Hamilton, ON – City of Hamilton Public Health Services is reminding residents that Raccoon Strain Rabies is established in Hamilton’s raccoon population. From December to January, 29 raccoons collected for testing were positive with raccoon rabies.
The overall risk to the public of being exposed to rabies remains low but there are measures you can take to minimize your risk. It is important to follow these precautions to avoid contact with rabid animals. Rabies can be fatal.
Always keep a safe distance from wild animals. Rabies can make animals aggressive or it can make them appear sick, scared or friendly. Stay away from all wildlife especially raccoons. Remember to also stay away from bats.
Be aware of and report to Public Health at 905-546-2489 the following:
- If you see a raccoon that appears sick, injured, aggressive, or is overly friendly and unafraid
- Do not feed, or attempt to help any raccoon directly
- If you are bitten or scratched by any animal including raccoons, skunks, other wildlife, cats, dogs, or bats
- Wash your wounds with soap and water and seek medical attention
