CityHousing Hamilton property receives $150K investment
HAMILTON, ON – To support the City’s ongoing commitment to targeted investment in the quantity and quality of social and affordable housing in Hamilton, today, Ward 3 Councillor Matthew Green announced a $150,000 investment in a CityHousing Hamilton (CHH) property located at 430 Cumberland Avenue.
The funds for this investment are derived from Ward 3 area rating funds for the installation of a playground and tot lot as well as site beautification efforts inside and around the building. Work on the property is expected to be completed in 2018.
- CHH provides affordable housing that is safe, well maintained, cost-effective and that supports the diverse needs of Hamilton’s many communities.
- CHH provides housing to families, seniors, couples, single people and people with special needs in a variety of housing forms including townhouses, apartments, single and semi-detached dwellings. Most of the housing is available on a rent-geared-to-income basis, however some projects offer market rent units as well.
- CHH is governed by a Board of Directors. The majority of the nine-member Board is comprised of City Councillors, including Ward 3 Councillor Matthew Green. The remaining members are drawn from the community, bringing a variety of experience and perspectives.
- Lack of stable and quality housing prevents full social participation and contributes to chronic poverty, poor health, and reduced educational attainment. Housing stability benefits our whole community: building strong, inclusive neighbourhoods; reducing illness and health costs; improving achievements and prosperity.
“Providing dignified and affordable housing is essential to build a city with opportunities for all. In only a few short years, we have invested tens of thousands of dollars in CityHousing Hamilton. We have put units back on line, and we have invested in the people that make our community so great. Today’s investment at 430 Cumberland Ave. means a new playground for kids and beautifying our property inside and out. This investment goes beyond bricks and mortar—it’s about supporting our neighbours. Today we continue our shared progress building a more vibrant, and more equitable community.”Matthew Green, Ward 3 Councillor
“This initiative is a great example of CityHousing Hamilton’s resident-centred approach to including residents in the conversation as we develop and improve the CHH properties they call home. With Councillor Green’s investment we can continue to create a solid foundation to support health and well-being for all the children and families at 430 Cumberland Avenue.”Tom Hunter CEO, CityHousing Hamilton
