Early morning fire sends two people to Hospital
HAMILTON, ON – March 10, 2016 – The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of fire alarm bells activated in a 11 storey high-rise apartment building located at 2130 King Street East, Hamilton at approximately 5:05 am this morning.
Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke conditions in a unit on the 8th floor of the building and upgraded the alarm to a structure fire. Upon further investigation, confirmed a working fire in a unit on the 5th floor of the building and smoke had migrated up to the 8th floor unit.
Firefighters entered the unit on the 5th floor and encountered heavy smoke conditions. During their search and rescue operations, firefighters located and removed the two occupants from the apartment. The patients was immediately placed in the care of Paramedics and transported directly to Hamilton General Hospital.
The fire was quickly extinguished and crews immediately started ventilation procedures in order to clear the building of smoke. All residents of the building have returned to their apartment units.
Firefighters contained the fire to the one apartment unit and damage is estimated at approximately $35,000. At this time there is no official cause for the fire and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified due to the serious injuries suffered by the occupants and to assist in determining the cause of the fire.
The Hamilton Fire Department recommends that citizens who live in a high-rise apartment building take the time to review the posted ‘Occupants Procedures’ contained within your buildings Fire Safety Plan, a copy of which is posted on each floor of your building.
