First Pedestrian Crossovers with flashing lights installed on Upper Sherman Avenue
HAMILTON, ON – November 18, 2016 – This morning, City of Hamilton crews began installing two pedestrian crossovers on Upper Sherman Avenue. While nine pedestrian crossovers have been installed throughout the city since September, the two being activated today are the first with flashing lights.
Pedestrian crossovers are a new way for pedestrians to easily and safely cross the road. By law, drivers and cyclists must stop and yield to pedestrians intending to cross the road and wait for them to completely reach the other side before driving through.
The crossover being installed on Upper Sherman Avenue at the bridge over the Lincoln Alexander Parkway will have a button pedestrians can push to active flashing lights. The one on Upper Sherman Avenue at Rowntree Drive (just north of Stone Church Road) will have the same flashing lights and overhead signs.
Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians should pay extra attention while getting familiar with these new crossovers.
