Mayor Eisenberger shortlisted for World Mayor 2016 Project
Hamilton, ON , January 16, 2017 – City of Hamilton Mayor, Fred Eisenberger is one of only two Mayors in North America to be shortlisted for the World Mayor 2016 Project. The shortlist for the 2016 World Mayor Prize, which was released on October 20th 2016, included 15 Mayors who, together with their communities, have made exceptional efforts to welcome refugees and integrate migrants into their communities.
The Government of Canada reported the resettlement of 35,745 Syrian newcomers in more than 36 communities across Canada between November 4, 2015 and November 27, 2016. Ontario received 15,552 (43%) of the national total, out of which 1,330 (4%) have since called Hamilton home.
The collective mandate of Mayor Eisenberger’s Advisory Committee on Syrian Newcomers, and the Working Groups continue to successfully collaborate to resettle and integrate newcomers in Hamilton. The progress of the Working Groups and the Advisory Committee to date has demonstrated the importance of strategic collaboration, community mobilization, and information sharing to support the short-term and long-term needs of all newcomers. Key issues, challenges and opportunities continue to be jointly discussed and addressed as we continue to move forward together.
The winner of the 2016 World Mayor Project will be announced on February 14 2017.
