Occupants Safely Escape House Fire
HAMILTON, ON – April 21, 2016 – Fire crews responded at 7:05 pm to a multi-unit, residential attached townhouse located at 1300 Upper Ottawa Street for a reported fire in Unit 39. Upon arrival, firefighters found the unit to be well involved with a basement fire, which had extended into the first floor level.
Firefighters worked quickly and were able to affect a successful knockdown and extinguishment of the fire on all floor levels with no fire spread to the adjacent units.
Damage to the unit is estimated at $100,000 in total. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire has been determined to be improper storage of flammable product in a metal can allowing the vapours to be ignited by an open flame either on the hot water tank or the furnace.
The Hamilton Fire Department reminds all citizens to store all flammable/combustible liquids in proper containers and do not store combustibles near heat sources.
