Statement from Mayor Eisenberger on Corporal Fred Engelbrecht
HAMILTON, ON -Today we honour Corporal Fred Engelbrecht WWII and Dieppe Veteran, who passed away this morning. A proud member of Hamilton’s Veteran’s Committee, Corporal Engelbrecht is the last Dieppe Veteran in Hamilton.
Mr. Engelbrecht was born March 13, 1920 in Hamilton ON and achieved the rank of Corporal in the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. Enlisting on April 6, 1940 and becoming a PRISONER OF WAR on Aug. 19, 1942 - May, 1945, he was forced to endure hard labour and a gruelling trek from Poland to Germany.
Corporal Engelbrecht’s selfless service to the Military and later the Hamilton Fire Department where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant, is an example of Hamiltonians giving of themselves to help others. The flag at Dieppe Veterans Memorial Park has been lowered to half-staff.
Along with my Council Colleagues and the City of Hamilton we thank Mr. Engelbrecht for his service.
