Statement from Mayor Eisenberger - Dieppe veteran Jack McFarland
Hamilton, ON – February 22nd, 2016 - Today we honour Dieppe veteran Jack McFarland, who has passed away at the age of 95. A member of the RHLI since 1936, Dieppe veteran, prisoner of war and post-war RHLI, Mr. McFarland rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer holding the appointment of Regimental Sergeant-Major with the RHLI, and then District Sergeant-Major with the former Hamilton Militia District. As well, a member of the Hamilton Police Force for 34 years, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant before retiring in 1981.
Mr. McFarland was a driving force behind the creation of Dieppe Veterans Memorial Park that opened in August 2003, and served on the Hamilton Veterans Committee beginning in 1989. We are grateful for his dedication, for being the voice of RHLI veterans, and all Hamilton veterans.
Mr. McFarland’s selfless service to the Military and with the Hamilton Police Service is an example of Hamiltonians giving of themselves to help others. The flag at Dieppe Veterans Memorial Park has been lowered to half-mast.
He will be deeply missed. “Along with my Council Colleagues and the City of Hamilton we thank Mr. McFarland for his service.” said Mayor Eisenberger.
